Tigers bounce back to split with Comets

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team split with the Mayville State University Comets in a nonconference doubleheader Wednesday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, S.D.

Mayville got off to a hot start in game one, defeating the Tigers 17-7. DWU quieted the MSU bats in the finale, taking game two 2-0.

In game one, Mayville State scored in every inning but two, pulling away early on. The Tigers saw a strong performances from seniors Dominic Sebastiani (San Francisco, Calif.) and Chris Combs (Las Vegas, Nev.). Sebastiani went 3-for-4 at the plate, while Combs went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a run. Combs also hit a towering homerun over the left field wall, his first of the season. Senior Cole Wenande (Alexandria, S.D.) went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs in the loss.

Starting pitcher Dustin Steckler (Garretson, S.D.) took the loss on the mound, tossing two innings, allowing two runs on three hits.

It was a different story in game two, as the Tiger pitching staff allowed no runs and giving up just five hits.

At the plate, first baseman Neil Nagle (Oslo, Minn.) went 2-for-2 with an RBI, while Combs added a double and an RBI.

Patrick Whetham (Garretson, S.D.) picked up the win, tossing two innings, giving up no earned runs on one hit. Whetham is 3-3 on the year.

The Tigers (18-17) jump back into conference action, taking on Doane College (Neb.) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cadwell Park.
