SIOUX CITY, Iowa – Despite rain delaying the start of game two, the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team's bats were not hampered as the Tigers swept Doane College in a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader matchup. DWU (20-17, 5-5 GPAC) took game one 8-6 and after a 90-minute delay, the Tigers held on for a 12-8 victory in the finale.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead, but Doane answered with three runs in the top of the fourth just before DWU added two runs of its own.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Tigers added four runs to take an 8-3 lead. Doane would rally in the top of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as DWU held on for the win.
Chris Combs (Las Vegas, Nev.) went 1-for-1 at the plate with two RBIs, two walks and scored three runs. Cole Wenande (Alexandria, S.D.) went 1-for-3, adding two RBIs. Senior Austin Calhoon (Winner, S.D.) added a hit and a walk in the win.
Dustin Steckler (Garretson, S.D.) picked up the win on the mound, tossing six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. Steckler is 3-4 on the year.
The Tigers struck first in game two, putting up a four spot in the first inning and building an 11-2 lead. Doane tried to rally after putting up five in the eighth, but the Tiger pitching staff kept them off the scoreboard for much of the contest backed by a gutsy performance from Calhoon. Calhoon picked up his first win on the mound this season after tossing seven and one third innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, throwing 157 pitches.
Senior first baseman Neil Nagle (Oslo, Minn.) went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs, while scoring two runs. Combs added a hit and two RBIs in the contest, while Dominic Sebastiani (San Francisco, Calif.) went 1-for-3 at the plate, adding three RBIs and scoring two runs.
