Wild game two win earns DWU split at Mayville State

MAYVILLE, S.D. – The bats came alive for the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team in a nonconference doubleheader matchup Wednesday against Mayville State University in Mayville, N.D.

Despite 12 hits for the DWU offense, the Tigers allowed five runs in the first inning and were unable to claw back as the Comets took game one 9-7. Game two was a different story for the Tigers as DWU scratched across 18 runs on 17 hits, defeating MSU 18-17.

In game one, the Tigers made it a one-run ball game in the top of the third, but two runs in the fourth and sixth innings propelled the Comets to victory.

Redshirt freshman Nathen Smith (Altoona, Manitoba, Canada) took the loss on the mound after tossing five innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits, while striking out four and walking six batters.

The Tigers saw MSU jump out to an 8-1 lead after one inning, but four runs in the third and seven in the fourth inning allowed DWU back in the game.

The Comets didn't go down without a fight as MSU answered with three runs in the fourth and two in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

DWU also capitalized on seven errors from the Comet defense. Wenande had a stellar night at the plate in game two, going 4-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs and a walk. Johnson, Neil Nagle (Oslo, Minn.) and Peyton Price (Norfolk, Neb.) added three hits, while Johnson had three RBIs. Senior outfielder Austin Calhoon (Winner, S.D.) went 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs, two runs, a walk and a home run, his fourth in four games.

Freshman pitchers Dillon Stadlman (Parkston, S.D.) and Gavin Reichmuth (Chandler, Ariz.) kept the Tigers in the game in the latter portion of the seven-inning affair. Stadlman picked up his first win in a Tiger uniform after tossing an inning of relief, allowing two runs on two hits. Reichmuth recorded the save for DWU, throwing an inning of relief, giving up two runs on four hits.

The Tigers (23-23) are scheduled to host Dordt College (Iowa) for a Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup at 4 p.m. Thursday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell, S.D.
