DWU stifled in GPAC tournament opener

FREMONT, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University baseball team has made a habit of playing its best at Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament time, as the Tigers entered play coming off its best performance of the season in the season finale.

The No. 8 seed Tigers were unable to muster much offense against No. 1 seed Midland University in the first game of the GPAC tournament for both teams, dropping the nine-inning affair 6-0 Thursday at Moller Field in Fremont, Neb.

Timely hitting and power was the key for Midland, as three Warriors hit home runs off of DWU starting pitcher Austin Calhoon (Winner, S.D.). Calhoon was tagged with the loss after tossing eight innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits, while striking out seven batters and walking one.

Midland starting pitcher Justin Meyer kept the Tigers bats in check throughout the contest. Meyer threw a complete game, allowing no runs on five hits, striking out 10 batters while walking four.

Tyler Waddle (Huron, S.D.) was the lone Tiger with a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Starting shortstop Dominic Sebastiani (San Francisco, Calif.) went 1-for-4 with a double in the loss.

The Tigers (25-26) look to continue their season in an elimination game against Northwestern College at 3 p.m. Friday in Fremont, Neb.
