Tigers Push for Sweep, Come Up Just Short Against Broncos

Mitchell, S.D. -  The Dakota Wesleyan Tigers showed resilience in both games of their doubleheader against Hastings College on Friday, splitting the series with the Broncos.

Game 1: Dakota Wesleyan 8, Hastings 4

Dakota Wesleyan came out strong in their season opener, defeating Hastings 8-4 with a dominant performance on both sides of the ball. Mitchell Sand delivered an impressive complete game on the mound, allowing just four runs on six hits, striking out six, and walking two. The Tigers' offense exploded in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring seven runs to take control of the game and secure the win after initially trailing 4-2.

Hastings jumped out to an early lead with home runs from Jaden Stone and Jordin Albertson, but Dakota Wesleyan quickly responded with a powerful offensive surge. Caleb Meyers drove in two runs, while Joseph Tharaldson and Thomas Dutton each contributed key RBIs to fuel the rally. Landon Ruesink added some extra power with a home run to extend the Tigers' lead, rounding out a well-rounded offensive effort.

Despite a strong performance from Hastings' James Velasquez, who struck out nine in 5.2 innings, the Tigers capitalized on eight walks and timely hitting. Dakota Wesleyan's defense also shined behind Sand, who was efficient and effective on the mound. With a combination of solid pitching and explosive offense, the Tigers dominated the game and began their season with a statement victory.

Game 2: Dakota Wesleyan 5, Hastings 7 - 9 Innings

Dakota Wesleyan fought hard but ultimately came up short in a 7-5 loss to Hastings College on Friday at Drake Field. Despite a late rally in the eighth inning and solid offensive production, the Tigers were unable to overcome an early deficit. Dakota Wesleyan is now 5-18 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

The Tigers displayed strong offensive performances, with Thomas Dutton driving in three RBIs and Landon Ruesink adding another. Dakota Wesleyan tallied 12 hits in the game, with Lane Darrow and Joseph Tharaldson each contributing two hits. Despite their efforts, Dakota Wesleyan left 10 runners on base, preventing them from fully capitalizing on scoring opportunities.

Starting pitcher Dakota Munger (0-1) worked eight innings, giving up six runs (three earned) while striking out six. The Tigers' bullpen, led by Caleb Meyers, kept the game close, but the team was unable to complete the comeback in the ninth. Dakota Wesleyan will look to regroup and build on the strong moments in this contest as they continue their conference schedule.
