No. 5 Doane pulls away early, tops No. 14 Tigers

MITCHELL, S.D. – The No. 14 Dakota Wesleyan University Tigers couldn't find their rhythm after No. 5 Doane University recorded 35 points in the first quarter, defeating DWU 61-34 on Blue & White Days Saturday at Joe Quintal Field in Mitchell, S.D.

In the first quarter, the Doane offense got rolling in the first Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup for both teams, when quarterback Jack Shadley scored from 11 yards out, putting his team up 7-0. Later in the first quarter, Tariq Mustafaa picked-off DWU starting quarterback Dillon Turner (Salem, Ark.) for a 20-yard interception, pushing the Doane lead to 21 points. Shadley went on to complete passes of 38, and 41 yards, extending Doane's lead to 35-0 in the NAIA Game of the Week.
 
With 9:41 to go in the second quarter, Shadley found Ben Berreckman for an eight-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 42-0.
 
DWU got on the board late in the second quarter when Kodi Larson (Tyndall, S.D.) found the end zone on a 10-yard scamper. After the half, DWU didn't go down without a fight as Turner found Jonny Withrow (Kimball, Neb.) on a 71-yard touchdown pass. With less than two minutes to go in the third quarter, Turner completed a 20-yard pass to Larson, resulting in a touchdown. Doane picked up two points after the Tiger PAT attempt was blocked and returned by Jarod Fiegener.
 
Heading into the fourth quarter, Turner found the end zone with his feet on a four-yard run, chipping away at Doane's lead. With 10 minutes to go, Turner completed a 12-yard touchdown pass to freshman Jace Pulse (Kimball, S.D.) and found Pulse again to convert a two-point conversion, but the Tigers did not get any closer.
 
Doane tallied 496 yards of total offense, passing for 325 and rushing for 171 yards. Shadley completed 20-of-31 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Garrett Sonderup rushed for 90 yards on eight attempts, good for two touchdowns. Drew Klein was the leading receiver for Doane, hauling in nine passes for 150 yards and a score.
 
DWU recorded 440 yards of total offense, 260 through the air and 180 yards on the ground. Turner was 15-of-25 for 240 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Withrow carried the ball nine times for 44 yards. Larson caught six passes for 89 yards and a touchdown, while rushing for another score.
 
On defense, Doane was led by Colten Mach with 10 tackles, while Brysen Mach added six. For DWU, Adam Bormann (Stickney, S.D.) tallied eight tackles and two tackles for loss, while Matt Jensen (Viborg, S.D.) and Dillon Rork (Grand Island, Neb.) chipped in seven tackles.
 
The Tigers (2-2, 0-1 GPAC) travel south to battle Hastings College (Neb.) for a GPAC matchup at 1 p.m. Saturday in Hastings, Neb.
