MITCHELL, S.D. – Offense was the name of the game for Dakota Wesleyan University, as the No. 22 Tiger football team racked up 644 yards of total offense en-route to a 39-20 victory over the Hastings College Broncos Saturday at Lloyd Wilson Field in Hastings, Neb.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard early, thanks to a 75-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Dillon Turner (Salem, Ark.). DWU later scored on a one-yard touchdown by the elusive quarterback, capping off a 90-yard drive to put the Tigers up 14-0. The Broncos answered with two field goals, but DWU responded in the second quarter on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Turner to Payne Ahrens (Gretna, Neb.) for his second score of the year.
In the beginning of the third quarter, Gaige Marshall (North Platte, Neb.) put the Tigers on the board again with a 74-yard touchdown run, followed by a John Fabrizius (Casper, Wyo.) two-yard scamper pushing the Tiger lead to 27.
Hastings didn't go down without a fight, scoring twice in less than three minutes in the third quarter. Heading into the fourth, the Tigers put the game away for good when Dustin Livingston (Irene, S.D.) hauled in a 34-yard touchdown pass from Turner.
DWU carried the ball 47 times for 343 yards, while passing for 301. The Tigers were led by Turner on the ground with 15 carries for 160 yards and two touchdowns. Turner exploited the Broncos secondary, completing 22-of-37 passes for 301 and two touchdowns.
On the ground, Marshall tallied 84 yards on only three carries and a score. Livingston caught eight passes for 92 yards and a touchdown.
The Tiger defense flexed its muscles as Adam Bormann (Stickney, S.D.) tallied 12 tackles, while Dillon Rork (Grand Island, Neb.) added eight. Nathan Dahl (Shelby, Neb.) added six tackles and a sack, while Zack Clement (Hartwick, Iowa) tallied four tackles and 1.5 sacks.
DWU (3-2, 1-1 GPAC) has a bye week before visiting Dordt College at 1 p.m., Oct. 8 in Sioux Center, Iowa.
