TIGER MEN’S BASKETBALL TAKES DOWN NO. 25 BRIAR CLIFF IN HUGE ROAD WIN

Sioux City, Iowa – Dakota Wesleyan men's basketball was able to fend off the last push from Briar Cliff on the road. DWU outshot them from the floor 51.9% to 39.2%. Six players score in the win as three of those players notch double-digit scoring.

How It Happened

  • The Tigers and Chargers battled in a close first half from Newman Flanagan Arena as DWU picked up an 18-10 lead after seven and a half minutes of play.
  • Dakota Wesleyan continued to extend their lead after Sawyer Schultz converted on a field goal and the 30-20 lead with 5:33 remaining.
  • Shortly after, Briar Cliff went on an 11-0 run that closed the Chargers deficit to three points with 1:17 left in the first half.
  • The Tigers picked up their last three points of the opening half from Schultz on a field goal, then converted on the and-one for the 37-31 lead at the break.
  • Koln Oppold got DWU rolling in the second half with a made shot from deep and then a jumper for a 42-33 lead only a minute and 45-seconds into the half.
  • BCU closed the gap to 44-41 after another short run of 8-0.
  • Nick Wittler dropped another shot from beyond the arc with 11:23 remaining, as the Tigers lead 53-44.
  • Briar Cliff added another seven points to shrink the DWU lead back to two points in the final nine and a half minutes of regulation.
  • With 8:32 left in the game, the Chargers; tied the game for the first time in the second half at 53-53.
  • The next trip down the floor, Oppold collected on a jumper setting DWU back in command 55-53.
  • Dakota Wesleyan's lead did not last long as the Chargers tied the game again at 55-55, but Schultz hit a jumper on the opposite side of the court for the 57-55 lead.
  • With 3:58 left in the game, BCU converted on a pair of free throws knotting the game at 62-62 once again.
  • Entering the final minute of the game; DWU was on top 67-62.
  • With 16-seconds still on the clock, Briar Cliff hit a three-pointer as DWU still led 71-65 after the made basket from deep, the Chargers called a timeout.
  • Dakota Wesleyan's last four points of the game all came from the free-throw line as Schultz converted on all four of them for the 75-68 upset win over No. 25 Briar Cliff.
  • Over the 40-minutes, DWU shot 51.9% from the floor, 36.4% beyond the arc, and 91.7% at the free-throw line.
  • Briar Cliff was held to shooting 39.2% from the floor with 51 attempts, 39.3% beyond the arc, and 85% at the foul line.
  • The Tigers narrowly outrebounded the Chargers 28-26 as both teams tallied 11 assists.
  • The Tigers forced eight turnovers while being charged with seven turnovers themselves.
