OPPOLD LEADS TIGERS TO A ROAD WIN 76-75 OVER MIDLAND, POLISHING OFF THE 2021-22 ROAD SCHEDULE

Fremont, Neb. – Dakota Wesleyan men's basketball rallied back from four down at the half to grab one last win on the road in the 2021-22 regular season. Koln Oppold goes for a season-high 33-points.

How It Happened

  • The Tigers fell behind early into the game 5-2 after Midland kicked things off with two baskets in a row.
  • After missed shots from deep by the Warriors, DWU climbed back within one point (8-7) as Jeffrey Schuch collected on a three-pointer.
  • Dakota Wesleyan continued to battle with Midland after five minutes into the game as Koln Oppold makes a layup giving the Tigers their first lead of the game 9-8 with 14:49 still to play in the first.
  • The DWU lead was short-lived as Midland went on a 13-3 run for the 21-12 lead over the Tigers and forced a Tiger timeout with 11-minutes to play.
  • Dakota Wesleyan came out of the timeout putting together a 7-0 run, closing the Warriors lead to 21-19, which forced a Midland timeout.
  • As the Tigers and Warriors crossed eight minutes to play in the first half, DWU tied the game at 21-21, then Midland converted on one of two free throws for the lead 22-21, then DWU took the lead back at 23-22 as Mason Larson hit a jump shot.
  • The Warriors went scoreless for over three minutes while the Tigers were held scoreless for over four minutes.
  • In the final 78-seconds of the first half, Midland pushed the lead out to four after converting on three free throws, 31-27.
  • Dakota Wesleyan came out in the second half making back-to-back baskets for the 32-31 lead.
  • Once again, the DWU lead was short-lived as Midland made a jumper on the opposite end for the one-point lead.
  • Oppold hit shots on two trips down the floor with a jumper to bring the Tigers within two, then a shot beyond the arc giving DWU the 39-38 lead.
  • After four ties in as many minutes Schuch ended the streak with a layup for the 50-48 lead, followed by Oppold on the next trip down the court for the 53-48 lead.
  • With eight minutes left in regulation, Midland climbed back within two points 57-55 before Oppold hit another shot from beyond the arc for the five-point lead.
  • After four baskets in a row from Oppold, Dakota Wesleyan recorded their largest lead of the game 71-61 with 3:22 left to play.
  • Oppold collects the final two Tiger baskets to lead 76-70 with 30-seconds left in the second half.
  • But the Warriors were not done yet as they hit a shot from deep, cutting the DWU lead to 76-73 with 23-seconds left.
  • Then dropping the DWU lead to one point 76-75 and missing the game-winning shot for the final score of Tigers 76 Warriors 75.
  • As a team, the Tigers shot 54.4% from the floor, 40% beyond the arc, and 85.7% at the free-throw line; while the Warriors shot 44.6% from the field, 31% from distance, and 84.2% at the foul line.
  • DWU outrebounds Midland 32-25 as both teams tallied nine assists.
  • Tigers score 38 points in the paint compared to the 24 points in the paint by the Warriors.

  • Koln Oppold: 33 points,77.7 FG%, 66.6 3-pt%, one-of-one free throw shooting, and nine rebounds.
  • Jeffrey Schuch: 21 points, 71.4 FG%, one-of-one beyond the arc, six rebounds, and five assists.
  • Sawyer Schultz: 12 points 40 FG%, 50 3-pt%, two-of-two free throw shooting, and three rebounds.

DWU men's hoops will be in action on Wednesday, February 16 at 7:45 p.m. against the Mustangs of Morningside.
