SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team was nearly perfect in September, winning six straight to end the month. With the calendar turning to October, the Tigers fell to Dordt College 2-1 in a Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup Wednesday in Sioux Center, Iowa.
The Tigers took the early lead, which they had been accustomed to during the recent streak, on the seventh goal of the season from reigning GPAC Offensive Player of the Week Chaz Foss. The senior from Rapid City, S.D., found the back of the net off an indirect free kick tapped to him by senior midfielder Tyler Grilley (Sioux Falls, S.D.).
Dordt evened the scored on a penalty kick from Brady Van Holland in the 43rd minute. The play also resulted in a red card for DWU senior defender Ryan West, forcing the Tigers to play the final 47 minutes with 10 men.
DWU held on until the 70th minute when the Defenders got a game-winning goal from V.J. Hachaba.
Dordt outshot DWU 12 to 7, while Tiger junior goalkeeper Alex Nelson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) made five saves in his first loss since Aug. 30.
The Tigers will try to get back in the win column against Hastings College at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
