MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team took advantage of two early goals from senior forward Chaz Foss (Rapid City, S.D.) to defeat Clarke University (Iowa) 2-0 in the 2014 home opener for the Tigers Sunday, Sept. 14 at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
Foss found the back of the net twice in the first six minutes to give DWU an early lead to work with. Foss's first tally was assisted by junior midfielder Adam Jahnel (Blair, Neb.), while the second came on an unassisted breakaway. The goals were the first two for Foss this season.
The Tigers outshot the Crusaders 17 to 7, while Foss put six shots on target in the win.
The DWU defense held Clarke to just four shots on net, which were all turned away by Tiger junior goalkeeper Alex Nelson (Sioux Falls, S.D.).
The shutout was the second straight for Nelson, who was named Great Plains Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week last week.
Clarke goalkeeper Jordan Steuer saw plenty of action in the contest, making a game-high eight save in the loss.
The Tigers (2-3) head back on the road to face Grace University at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17 in Omaha, Neb.
