DWU Men Top Morningside in 2OT

SIOUX CITY, Neb. – It took 16 extra minutes of game time, but the Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team eventually netted the game-winning goal against Morningside College in a 2-1 double-overtime victory in a Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup Tuesday in Sioux City, Iowa.

The score remained knotted at zero into the 70th minute of action, when the Mustangs broke through on a goal from Reece Maxon on an assist from Jesse Rodriguez.

The game quickly turned in the Tigers' favor as junior Zach Schneider (Sioux Falls, S.D.) beat several Morningside defenders and slotted a pass across the face of the goal to senior Eric Nelson (Sioux Falls, S.D.), who put it away to tie the game.

Shortly after the game-tying goal, Morningside's Mike Marian was ejected with a red card after a late tackle on DWU senior Tyler Grilley (Sioux Falls, S.D.), forcing the Mustangs to play the rest of the game with 10 men.

After the final whistle of regulation, the two teams battled through the first 15 minute overtime period without a goal. Shortly into the second OT period, found the back of the net when senior forward Chaz Foss (Rapid City, S.D.) served a ball into the goal box where senior midfielder Adam Jahnel (Blair, Neb.) was waiting to put away the game winner.

The Tigers outshot the Mustangs 14-9 and the win snapped a two-game skid for DWU, which improves to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the GPAC.

DWU continues GPAC competition against Northwestern College at 8:15 p.m. Friday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
