Concordia steals one from DWU men on Senior Day

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team allowed two late goals to Concordia University in a one-goal loss in a Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.

The Tigers scored two quick goals in the second half and looked poised for their second straight GPAC win, but the Bulldogs answered with a pair of goals in the closing minutes to steal one from DWU on Senior Day. The 3-2 loss drops DWU to 4-11-1 overall and 1-6-1 in the GPAC.

The Tigers honored nine seniors prior to the game. Alex Nelson, Tyson Moodie, Travis Moodie, Lino Cortez, Lionel Karyea, Zach Schneider, Adam Jahnel, Sterling Hubbard and Josue Garcia each played in their last game at home for the Tigers on Saturday.

The Tigers and Bulldogs were scoreless until Concorida'a Micah Lehenbauer found the back of the net on a feed from Justin Lawrie in the 42nd minute.

The Tigers were without a shot on goal until the 59th minute, but DWU's Nelson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) made the first one count count. The converted goalkeeper scored on an assist from junior Peter Wartenberg (Chaska, Minn.). The tie did not last long, as DWU quickly took its first lead of the game, as Derek Brenner (Yankton, S.D.) scored his third goal this week on an assists from Hubbard (Jamestown, N.D.).

DWU carried its slim lead into the final minute of the game, but Concordia found an answer. Lawrie knotted the game in the 83rd minute with an assist from Toby Down. Concordia stole the win on an unassisted goal from Matt Meisinger with less than 30 seconds to play.

The Tigers hit the road for the final two games of the regular season, starting with Briar Cliff University at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday in Sioux City, Iowa.
