Tigers storm back in second half for big win over BCU

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – After a heartbreaking loss on Senior Day, the Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team did not dwell on the past and claimed a 2-1 win over Briar Cliff University Tuesday in Sioux City, Iowa.

The Tigers trailed 1-0 at the half but came out firing with two second-half goals to down the Chargers and stay in the hunt for a berth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference postseason tournament. The win pushed DWU's record to 5-11-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the GPAC.

The DWU tying goal came off the foot of sophomore midfielder Derek Brenner (Yankton, S.D.), who has showed off his scoring prowess of late. Brenner scored his fourth goal in three games, also the first four of his career, in the 61st minute on a feed from senior Adam Jahnel (Blair, Neb.).

The Tigers took the lead a short time later with Jahnel scoring his fourth goal of the season on an assist from freshman Yoshi Kogiso (Cuernavaca, Mexico) in the 76th minute giving DWU a 2-1 lead late for the second straight game. There was no coming back on the Tigers this time, as DWU held on for its second conference win in three games.

The Chargers got on the board early with a goal in the third minute from Christopher Nkoghe to put BCU on top. The Chargers outshot DWU 20-9 and took nine more corner kicks, but Tiger freshman goalkeeper Gaston Miteff (Berazategui, Argentina) kept BCU off the board after the early goal. Miteff made 10 saves, giving him double digits for the fourth time since taking over in net for DWU.

The Tigers close out the regular season against Nebraska Wesleyan University at 3 p.m. Saturday in Lincoln, Neb. DWU need to top NWU and get some help to make the GPAC postseason tournament.
