DWU men drop opener to Mary

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team hosted the University of Mary, an NCAA Division II program, in the 2016 season opener on Pack the Pitch night Wednesday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.

The Tigers fell to the Marauders 4-0 in the first regular season game under new head coach Paul Bennett, as Mary outshot DWU 29-8 in the contest. Mary got on the board first with a goal by Jordan Pearce in the 21st minute. Will Hall doubled the Marauder lead with a tally in the 43rd minute.

The Tigers came out of the break with more aggression, putting the pressure on the Mary defense but could not break through. DWU goalkeeper Gaston Miteff (Berazategui, Argentina) kept his team in the game with a save on a penalty kick early in the second half. Mary added two goals late to pull away and secure the win.

Miteff finished with six saves and drops to 0-1 on the season, while Derek Brenner (Yankton, S.D.) tallied a team-high two shots on goal for the Tigers.

Dakota Wesleyan (0-1) visits Concordia College (Minn.) at 2 p.m. Friday in Moorhead, Minn.
