DWU men snatch win over York in thrilling fashion

MITCHELL, S.D. – It was a defensive thriller at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex Saturday night as the Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team defeated York College 1-0 in the final minutes.

Shots came at a premium for the Tigers (1-1) as they finished with nine shots compared to 21 from York. The Panthers (1-1) came out of the gates fast as they tallied a shot and two corner kicks in the first five minutes of the match. However, Gaston Miteff (Berazategui, Argentina) held his ground as he knocked away several shots in the first half.

DWU found its rhythm in the first half as Connor Dodds (Durham, England) took the corner kick and found the head of John Sutherland (Hartlepool, England) but missed wide left. Seconds later, Chandler Briggs (Springfield, Neb.) connected on a shot, but had it saved by the York goalie.

With the clock winding down, both teams picked up the urgency to find the lone goal to win the game. With less than two minutes to play, Shayne Quinn (Mesa, Ariz.) scored the deciding goal to give the Tigers their first victory of the season and first regular season win for head coach Jose Lopez.

Briggs tallied four shots and three shots on goal, as Quinn finished with one shot and a goal. Miteff ended the game with seven saves.

The Tigers are in action as they take on Concordia College-Moorhead in an exhibition game at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
