Tigers draw against Lancers

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team battled Mount Marty College and weather conditions in their 1-1 draw in Great Plains Athletic Conference action Wednesday night in Mitchell.

 The Tigers (4-7-1, 1-4-1 GPAC) had multiple chances in the first half as they got off nine shots but could not find the back of the net. Mount Marty (2-5-2, 0-3-2 GPAC) had eight shots in the first frame and were able to score in the 16th minute. That was all of the scoring in the first half as both teams entered half time with the Lancers up 1-0.

 DWU once again had offensive chances in the second half but this time coming from corner kicks as the Tigers racked up six corner kicks. DWU would finally find the back of the net in the 63rd minute, when John Sutherland (Hartlepool, England) sent a laser into the back of the goal to even the match at one apiece.

 Both defenses clamped down and forced the game into overtime. The Tigers and Lancers traded great scoring chances in overtime as the game went into double overtime. Shots became limited in the second overtime and both teams settled for a 1-1 draw on a cold night at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex.

 DWU finished with 18 shots in the match, 12 of those were on goal. Cesar Tabares (Phoenix, Ariz.) tallied seven shots, while Tyler Anderson (Monticello, Minn.) and Rene Montiel (Fremont, Calif.) both notched three shots. Gaston Miteff (Buenos Aires, Argentina) started at goalie for the Tigers and notched four save in the game.

 DWU will head back to the road to face Concordia University at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in Seward, Neb.
