DWU drops road contest

SIOUX CITY, Iowa. – In the final road match of the year, the Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team dropped their Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup against Briar Cliff, 3-0 on Wednesday in Sioux City, Iowa.

 DWU (4-11-1, 1-8-1 GPAC) began the game with Briar Cliff (9-5-2, 6-2-1 GPAC) putting the offensive pressure on early but the Tigers held strong through the first 30 minutes of play on defense. The Chargers found the back of the net in the 35th minute and tallied 16 shots in the first half, but DWU only found themselves down 1-0 at halftime.

 The Chargers continued the offensive pressure in the second half adding goals in the 53rd and 58th minute. The Tigers found great goalie play from Gaston Miteff (Buenos Aires, Argentina) who stopped eight shots in the second half, including a save on a penalty kick from the Chargers. DWU tried to climb back late with four second half shots, but it was not enough as the Tigers fell 3-0.

 Offensively, the Tigers were led by John Sutherland (Hartlepool, England) who notched two shots in the game and as a team finished with five shots. Miteff gathered 15 saves on 18 shots in the loss.

 The Tigers will return home for senior day and take on Morningside College at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell.
