Tigers unable to capitalize in season opening defeat

MITCHELL, S.D. – Despite playing a portion of the second half up two men, the Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team was unable to record a goal as they fell to Waldorf University, 2-0 Saturday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell.

 Neither team could muster a goal through the first 36 minutes of play. However, the Warriors (1-0-1) broke the scoreless tie in the 37^th minute to take a 1-0 lead.

 The Tigers (0-1) were unable to find the back of the net in the first half as they trailed by a goal through the opening 45 minutes of play.

 Waldorf did not take long to add to its' lead in the second half as they scored eight minutes into the stanza.

 In the 73^rd minute, a Warriors player was handed a red card the resulted in a DWU penalty kick. Isais Pio (Santa Cruz, Calif.) took the penalty kick, but missed the free kick.

 Just 10 minutes later, Waldorf received its' second red card of the game, giving the Tigers a two-player advantage. But DWU was unable to score, dropping its' opening match of the season.

 Andrew Browning (Grand Caymen, Caymen Islands) and Angel Tapia (Phoenix, Ariz.) tallied two shots each, while five other players finished with a shot. Matthew Campbell (Duluth, Minn.) recorded five saves in the start in goal.

 The Tigers enter a two-game road stretch as they battle Bethany College at 8 p.m. on Friday in Lindsborg, Kan.
