HILLSBORO, Kan. – The Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team played in two extra time games over the weekend as they fell to Bethany College 2-1 in extra time and tied with Tabor College 1-1 in two extra time periods on Friday and Saturday.
In the first game of the weekend, both teams were held scoreless through the opening half of play. However, the Swedes (1-0) scored first with a goal in the 66th minute. It did not take long for the Tigers (0-2-1) to answer with a goal of their own. Rafael Medrano (Phoenix, Ariz.) tied the game in the 72nd minute.
The game headed to extra time with the score tied, 1-1. Bethany did not waste any time as they broke the tie in the 92nd minute to take the game from DWU.
Medrano finished with two shots and a goal, while Jason Jattan (Union City, Calif.) tallied two shots. Matthew Campbell (Duluth, Minn.) recorded eight saves in the goal for the Tigers.
The second game of the weekend began similarly to the first with neither team finding the back of the net in the opening half. Chances were there for the Tigers as they saw two corner kick opportunities in the first half but could not capitalize.
DWU struck first as Julian Mole (Canning, Buenos Aires) found Joel Sanchez (Salinas, Calif.) for the goal. However, the Blue Jays (0-0-1) tied the game with a goal just 14 minutes later. Neither team scored a goal in either extra time period as the game finished with a 1-1 draw.
Mole tallied five shots, two shots on goal and an assist, as Sanchez finished with two shots and a goal. Jattan notched three shots and a shot on goal, while Andrew Browning (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) finished with two shots and a shot on goal and Campbell grabbed three saves.
The Tigers return home to face York College for a non-conference tilt at 3 p.m. on Sept. 10 at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex.
