YANKTON, S.D. – It was a pair of first-half goals that was all that was scored as the Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team and Mount Marty University finished with a 1-1 draw in Great Plains Athletic Conference action on Wednesday in Yankton, S.D.
The Lancers (1-3-2, 0-3-2 GPAC) began the game with a pair of shots, but Matthew Campbell (Duluth, Minn.) made sure the shots did not get past him.
It was DWU's turn to put the pressure on as they sent a pair of shots and a corner kick towards the MMU goal. However, none of the shots were able to slide past the goalkeeper as the score remained 0-0.
Both teams traded goal scoring opportunities throughout the half, but both defenses held strong to keep the match scoreless.
Ndrin Maloku (Prishtine, Albania) broke the scoreless draw with a penalty kick in the 36th minute to put the Tigers (2-5-1, 1-4-1 GPAC) up by a goal. However, the Lancers pulled even just before halftime with an equalizer to send the teams to their locker rooms with a 1-1 tie.
Mount Marty outshot DWU in the second half, 9-5. Despite 14 shots combined in the second frame, neither team was able to find the back of the net as the game went into extra time.
With just three shots taken in both extra time periods, the game concluded with a 1-1 draw.
Maloku led the Tigers with six shots and a goal, while Jason Jattan (Union City, Calif.) added a pair of shots and a shot on goal. Campbell finished the game with 12 saves in the net for the Tigers.
DWU is set to host Briar Cliff University at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday from the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex.
