DAKOTA WESLEYAN COMES UP SHORT VERSUS V-HAWKS

MITCHELL, S.D. – For the second straight season the Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team battled Viterbo University in non-conference action, this time with Dakota Wesleyan hosting the match on Saturday from the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D. Viterbo ultimately escaped with the 2-0 decisive victory.

VU opened the match on the offensive attack registering a pair of both corner kicks and shots in the first 10 minutes of action. DWU forward Jabari Campbell (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) curtailed the Viterbo momentum momentarily with a shot that went high, over the goal in the 14th minute of action.

Despite a Tiger (1-4-0) corner kick in the 18th minute by Lucas Paixao (Sao Paulo, Brazil), Viterbo attempted multiple shots on goal near the 20th minute. One such attempt found the back of the net in the 24th minute and the V-Hawks (1-0-1) controlled a 1-0 lead midway through the opening period.

Unphased, DWU right back Benjamin Lazcano (Concepcion, Chile) struck a shot at goal minutes before halftime, though the shot was blocked. VU controlled the one-goal lead as both teams headed to the locker room. Tiger goalkeeper Hunter Birozy (Norco, Calif.) tabbed five saves in the first period while Campbell and Anthony Acosta (Grand Island, Neb.) paced the Blue and Gray in shots.

The V-Hawks continued their momentum early in the second period looking to extend the lead, however, a defensive save by Garrett Shanley (Eagan, Minn.) in the 49th minute kept the score at 1-0.

Midway through the second period, Lazcano attempted a second look at goal, though his attempt was turned away once again.

The Viterbo offense finally broke the match wide open with a second goal near the 80th minute and took a 2-0 lead. The Tigers were unable to respond and suffered the two-goal, home defeat.

Birozy finished the day with seven saves at goalkeeper while the Dakota Wesleyan attack attempted six shots.
