
FOREST CITY, Iowa – In the midst of a four-game road stretch, the Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer team faltered versus Waldorf University in non-conference action by a score of 6-0 on Saturday in Forest City, Iowa.
Both teams traded shot attempts in the early going including a shot on goal by Dakota Wesleyan forward Cesar Requena (Lima, Peru) in the fifth minute. However, the shot attempt was saved and the score remained knotted at 0-0 in the early going.
It was both defenses tightening down over the next twenty minutes before Waldorf scored the first goal of the match, taking the 1-0 lead in the 25th minute.
Offensively, the Tigers (1-6-0) tried to find an offensive spark following a corner kick by Ryan Mix (Sioux Falls, S.D.) in the 27th minute. Moments later, Roberto Gerardo Romero (Lynwood, Calif.) struck a shot on goal which was blocked and the WU advantage remained at 1-0.
Lucas Paixao (Sao Paulo, Brazil ) sent a shot wide of the goal with 10 minutes remaining in the half before the Warriors (3-2-1) added a second goal in the 43rd minute. Waldorf carried the two-goal lead into halftime along with a 10-4 advantage in shot attempts.
To begin the second half, the WU offensive attack kept its foot on the pedal, adding a pair of goals in the first 10 minutes and controlled a 4-0 lead at the 57th minute.
Late attempts on goal by Rafael Calderon (Talca, Chile) and Benjamin Lazcano (Concepcion, Chile) gave DWU a shot on getting on the scoreboard, though both shots were off target. Meanwhile, Waldorf added a pair of goals midway through the second period and captured the 6-0 home victory.
Both Romero and Requena paced the Tigers with three shots each as Dakota Wesleyan finished the day with 12 shots and four corner kicks. At goalkeeper, Hunter Birozy (Norco, Calif.) registered 12 saves in the net.
The Tigers return to the pitch next to open Great Plains Athletic Conference play versus conference foe Hastings College at 8 p.m. on Saturday in Hastings, Neb.
