SIOUX CITY, IOWA – The Dakota Wesleyan University men's soccer program suffered a 4-0 defeat at the hands of conference foe Morningside University in Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Saturday from Elwood Olsen Stadium in Sioux City, Iowa.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dakota Wesleyan defensive back line weathered a pair of early shot attempts by the Morningside offensive attack. DWU junior goalkeeper Hunter Birozy denied both opportunities and the score sat knotted at 0-0 in the first 10 minutes of action.
MOR though responded seconds later with the first goal of the match in the ninth minute taking a 1-0 lead.
Looking to respond, the Tigers (4-13-1, 3-7-1 GPAC) strung together multiple corner kicks in the 13th minute executed by Dakota Wesleyan junior midfielder Lucas Paixao. Neither opportunity yielded a Dakota Wesleyan goal while the Mustangs (11-6-0, 8-3-0 GPAC) added consecutive goals in the 20th minute to claim the 3-0 lead.
Junior left back Rafael Calderon and freshman forward Jabari Campbell responded late in the period with chances on goal; yet Morningside held the three-goal advantage at halftime.
In the second period, Calderon and Cesar Requena were faced with looks on goal midway through the second period while MOR added a fourth goal in the 73rd minute. The Mustangs ultimately preserved the 4-0 victory thanks to a 25-13 command in shots
Birozy and the Dakota Wesleyan defensive back line finished with eight saves in the contest. Four different Tigers attempted 2-or-more shots on the night led by Calderon and Requena with four and three, respectively.
