STRONG SECOND HALF PROPELLED TIGERS TO 2-0 WIN OVER D-2 HARDROCKERS

Rapid City, S.D. – Dakota Wesleyan men's soccer team used strong performances from Vladislav Burkov and Cesar Cornejo to defeat D-2 opponent South Dakota School of Mines 2-0. Both goals were scored late in the second half after penalties and yellow cards against the Hardrockers changed the flow of the game for the Tigers.

How it Happened:

The Hardrockers pushed the aggression early in the match before both teams slowed down. The first half only saw 11 total shots taken. Both defenses forced the game to slow down, with neither offense getting solid looks at the goal. The heat played a factor in the match as players appeared exhausted going into halftime.

The second half was a different story, the Tigers found their second wind and picked up the pace. Controlling the ball for the majority of the second half, the Tigers fired six shots. After some yellow cards and a few penalties against the Hardrockers, the Tigers really found their groove. The first goal for the Tiger's was scored by Vladislav Burkov in the 63' minute on a penalty kick. Burkov kept bringing the heat, as he forced the defenders to focus on him, Burkov was able to find teammate Cesar Cornejo open for his goal scored in the 69' minute. The defense stood strong for the Tigers, as they forced turnovers, blocked shots, and goalie Hunter Birozy had two big saves.
