Coach Downs will enter his second year as the Head Coach of the DWU softball team. Downs has had an impressive coaching career, marked by notable achievements and successful stints at various levels of softball and baseball.

Before joining DWU, Downs served as the head coach at Embry-Riddle University (ERU) in Prescott, Arizona. In the 2021-22 season(s), he guided his team to a remarkable 52-11 overall record. This achievement placed ERU in the top 25 of the NAIA National Softball Poll for the first time in school history, earning a ranking of 23rd. During his tenure at ERU, Downs demonstrated his coaching prowess by defeating seven out of the nine top 25 opponents he and his team faced. Prior to becoming the head coach at ERU, Downs spent one season as an assistant coach, where he was responsible for recruiting and assisting in all aspects of the softball program. He also played a crucial role in scouting opponents and preparing the team for training and games. Before transitioning to collegiate coaching, Downs honed his coaching skills as a hitting instructor at Valley Vista High School in Surprise, Arizona. His expertise in teaching hitting techniques led to a significant improvement in the team's batting average, which jumped to .375 under his guidance.

Beyond his coaching career, Downs had a successful playing career in baseball. He played for 20 seasons of amateur ball, showcasing his talent and passion for the game. His dedication and skills earned him a tryout opportunity with the Kansas City Royals organization. Throughout his playing career, Downs competed in four state championship games and two super regionals, highlighting his experience and familiarity with high-stakes competitions.

With his wealth of coaching and playing experience, Coach Downs brings a strong foundation and a winning mindset to his role at Dakota Wesleyan University. The team's exceptional performance in his first season, breaking three school records and coming close to breaking five others, is a testament to his ability to inspire and guide his players to achieve their best. The clean sweep at home further exemplifies the team's success under his leadership.
