Coach Tommy Downs is entering his third year as the Head Coach of the Dakota Wesleyan University (DWU) softball team. Known for his impressive coaching career, Coach Downs has achieved significant success across various levels of softball and baseball.
 
Before joining DWU, Coach Downs served as the head coach at Embry-Riddle University (ERU) in Prescott, Arizona. During the 2019-22 seasons, he led ERU to an outstanding 52-11 overall record, earning the program its first-ever placement in the top 25 of the NAIA National Softball Poll, with a ranking of 23rd, and winning conference championship. His coaching prowess was further demonstrated as his team defeated seven out of the nine top 25 opponents they faced.
 
Prior to his head coaching role at ERU, Coach Downs spent a season as an assistant coach, where he was instrumental in recruiting, scouting opponents, and preparing the team for training and competition. His ability to develop talent and strategize for success was evident in every aspect of the program.
 
Now heading into his third year at DWU, Coach Downs has already made a significant impact, with his team breaking nine school records in just two seasons. Under his leadership, the team set new benchmarks in home runs, triples, stolen bases, and achieved a remarkable team batting average of .319. As Coach Downs prepares to bring in his first full recruiting class, he is poised to make even greater strides in the highly competitive GPAC conference.
 
In addition to his coaching career, Coach Downs had a successful 20-season amateur baseball career. His dedication and skill on the field earned him a tryout with the Kansas City Royals organization, and he competed in four state championship games and two super regionals, underscoring his experience in high-stakes competition.
 
With a wealth of coaching and playing experience, Coach Downs brings a winning mindset and a solid foundation to his role at Dakota Wesleyan University. The future of DWU Tigers softball looks bright as Coach Downs continues to build on his early successes and guide his team toward new heights.
