MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball team used early 3-point shooting prowess and a strong game from junior Kristin Sabers to topple instate rival Dakota State University in a nonconference matchup Tuesday in Madison, S.D.
The Tigers (2-0) hit five 3-pointers in the first quarter, but could not pull away from the Trojans (4-2). DWU held on to the lead, eventually closing out DSU 65-60 in the Tigers first test of the young season. The Tigers remain perfect on the season heading into the Farmer State Bank Blumenberg Classic later this week at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D.
After a slow start for both teams, DWU started to fill the basket with 3-pointers in the first quarter, including a pair from Sabers (Mitchell, S.D.) to build an early lead, but DSU rallied to close the first frame strong with the Tigers holding a slim one-point lead heading into the second. The teams battled back and forth through the second quarter. DWU extended its lead heading into the break with a 3-pointer from sophomore Shanna Selby (Faith, S.D.) off the backboard and in as time expired in the first half.
The Tigers and Trojans remained close in the second half with DWU holding off the Trojans to secure the win. DWU outshot DSU 43.6 percent to 36.1 percent from the field, while each team pulled down 41 rebounds. DWU made eight 3-pointers to just there from DSU.
Now getting the chance for extended playing time with DWU, Sabers took advantage against DSU. The 6-foot forward scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-13 shooting, while hitting three from deep. She added five rebounds, five assists, a steal and a block in the win.
Junior Erica Herrold (Dimock, S.D.) posted 13 points and four rebounds, while sophomore Amber Bray (Anoka, Minn.) picked up double figures with 10 points. True freshman Rylie Osthus (De Smet, S.D.) nearly completed a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds.
The Trojans were led by Sharee Gailbraith with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Kendra Lindblad added 13 points.
The Tigers take on Tabor College at 6 p.m. Friday on day one of the Farmers State Bank Blumenberg Classic.
