Carr paces Tigers past Saints

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Freshman Sarah Carr sparked the No. 3 Dakota Wesleyan University women's basketball team, recording 20 points and seven rebounds off the bench in a 80-62 victory over Presentation College in the South Dakota NAIA Pentagon Classic on Sunday in Sioux Falls, S.D.

  The Tigers cruised to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, dismantling the Saints' defense. Erica Herrold (Dimock, S.D.) hit a 3-pointer late in the first to push the DWU lead to 12 points. Heading into the second quarter, Carr went to work as she scored twice in the first seconds of the quarter. The Huron, S.D., native gave the Tigers a 19-point lead with 3:40 to go in the quarter. The Tigers headed into the locker room shooting 53 percent from the field.

 In the third quarter, junior Ashley Bray (Anoka, Minn.) was able to penetrate the undersized Presentation defense, helping the Tigers tally 40 points in the paint. Bray went on to record eight points and three rebounds.

 With a solid bench and talented freshmen, the Tigers took their largest lead of the game with 9:26 to go on a layup from Bray. A 3-pointer from sophomore Hope Menning (Corsica, S.D.) with 1:46 to go in the game sealed the victory for the Tigers. The Tiger bench accumulated 45 points in the contest, thanks to a strong effort from Kynedi Cheeseman (Alexandria, S.D.) and Kristin Sabers (Mitchell, S.D.) Cheeseman and Sabers added 10 and nine points, respectively.

 Herrold finished with 12 points, while sophomore Rylie Osthus (De Smet, S.D.) added 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. The Tigers shot 48 percent from the field and 87 percent from the free-throw line. DWU outrebounded Presentation 46-23.

 The Tigers (4-0) take on Indiana University Northwest at 2:30 p.m. Friday in La Crosse, Wis.
