Recap –
The Tigers riding a three-game winning streak looked to make it four against the Hastings Broncos. DWU opened the first frame strong, jumping out to an early 11-4 lead. During that stretch the Tigers were looking down low towards their freshman leading scorer in Emma Yost. With the game starting to trend towards how the matchup went in Mitchell when the Tigers won 91-45, the Broncos responded with an and one bucket and shot from deep to cut the Dakota Wesleyan lead to one. Hastings tied it up with a three-pointer at the buzzer for a 15-15 first quarter score. DWU had a very uncharacteristic sloppy first quarter with five turnovers. Of the 15 points, Yost and Morgan Edelman combined for 12 with Yost leading the way with her eight.
The second quarter saw the Tigers refocus and get back to their brand of basketball opening the frame with a 7-0 run to retake the lead. Hastings on their home court wouldn't go away easy like at the Corn Place with a 9-2 run to tie it back up halfway through the second quarter. This run was fueled by more uncharacteristic careless play by the Tigers who turned it over three times during the stretch. The back-and-forth contest of runs continued when DWU grabbed an eight-point lead on a 9-1 run. The Tigers were spreading the ball around during the stretch with Yost, Edelman, Isabel Ihnen, and Shalayne Nagel all recording buckets. Hastings held Dakota Wesleyan scoreless in the final three minutes while getting two buckets to fall leaving it a 33-30 halftime score. Edelman led with 12 points and four rebounds, while Nagel continued her case for defensive player of the year with three blocks and a steal in the half.
Tigers out of the locker room had their best quarter as they often do with making adjustments and changes at half. DWU won the quarter 21-14, giving them a 10-point lead going to the final quarter. Dakota Wesleyan used good ball movement during the quarter leading to seven different players getting in the scoring column in the quarter alone while also cleaning up the turnovers with just three in the third. The Tigers shot 50% from the floor, beyond the arc, and at the free throw line. DWU continued their strong efforts on both ends of the court leading to their biggest lead of the night at 69-53 with three minutes left in the game. With the game starting to look out of reach, the Broncos went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to single digits at 69-60 with 1:30 left. The Tigers easily could have put a stamp on the game by knocking down free throws, but Tigers struggled at the line only converting six of their 12 attempts down the stretch. The lead was too big with the amount of time left, and DWU grabbed two offensive rebounds on missed free throws to finally put the game away at 75-64.
