ABERDEEN, S.D. – After 10 days off, the Dakota Wesleyan University women's soccer team was back in action in its final nonconference game of the season against Presentation College Wednesday in Aberdeen, S.D.
The Tigers scored a season-high four goals to top the Saints 4-2. The win pushes DWU to 2-5 overall heading into the Great Plains Athletic Conference schedule, starting this weekend.
DWU got the scoring started, but in the wrong net, as Presentation took advantage of an own goal by the Tigers in the eighth minute. The Tigers responded before halftime with a penalty-kick goal off the foot of freshman Abby Behm (Sioux Falls, S.D.) for her second tally of the game, tying the game heading into the break.
The Tigers grabbed the lead for good on a goal from senior Maranda Ehrenfired (Pierre, S.D.) just over five minutes into the second half to put DWU up 2-1. The Tigers pushed their lead to a pair after a goal from junior Kira Miller (Preston, Idaho) in the 75th minute. Miller is normally a goalkeeper for DWU.
Ehrenfried secured the win four minutes later with her second goal of the game and third of the season. Presentation did add a goal on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute, but it was not enough.
There were plenty of shots taken in the game with the Saints outshooting the Tigers 31-27. Ehrenfried led the Tigers with five shots on net, while Behm added three. Sophomore goalkeeper Cici Schneider (Sioux Falls, S.D.) picked up the win, making eight saves.
The Tigers open the GPAC season against Doane College at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
