MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women's soccer team is still seeking its first conference win of the season after falling 3-0 to Morningside College in a Great Plains Athletic Conference match Wednesday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
The match was part of Red Card Cancer Awareness Night, as the Tigers raised $4,500 for Coach Daniel Ohayon, who is a soccer coaching legend in Sioux Falls, S.D., and has been battling cancer for four years.
The Tigers (2-9, 0-4 GPAC) stayed with the Mustangs (7-3-1, 3-1 GPAC) for most of the first half until Morningside's Amy Grause netted the first goal of the game on an assist from Merle Bublitz in the 32nd minute. The Mustangs added goals from Jackie Martinez and Bublitz in the second half to pull away. Amy Samuelson had the assist on both second half goals for Morningside.
The Tigers were outshot 23-7 with DWU junior goalkeeper Kira Miller (Preston, Idaho) making 14 saves in the losing effort. Senior Maranda Ehrenfried (Pierre, S.D.) was the lone Tiger with multiple shots, finishing with three.
DWU looks for its first GPAC win against the College of Saint Mary at 6 p.m. Friday in Mitchell.
