MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women's soccer team broke through with its first Great Plains Athletic Conference win of the season against Mount Marty College Wednesday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
The Tigers controlled the action from start to finish but could not find the back of the net in regulation. In the first minute of the second overtime, true freshman Gemini Wesley (Sioux Falls, S.D.) deposited the ball in the net to give DWU the win.
With the win, which snapped a seven-game losing streak, the Tigers are 3-12 overall and 1-7 in the GPAC.
The Tigers outshot the Lancers 23-1 with DWU freshman Abby Behm picking up five shots on net. Despite the barrage of scoring chances, DWU could not solve MMC goalkeeper Courtney True until the second overtime. True finished the game with 16 saves for the Lancers, many of the spectacular variety.
After a cross from senior Maranda Ehrenfried (Pierre, S.D.) fell wide of the net, Behm played the ball back across allowing Wesley to tap in the game winner on the goal line.
Sophomore goalkeeper Cici Schneider (Sioux Falls, S.D.) picked up her second shutout of the season in the win, making one save, coming out to challenge and win a dangerous ball in the final moments of regulation.
The Tigers look to continue their momentum against Concordia University at 1 p.m. Saturday in Mitchell. The game is also Senior Day for DWU and the last home game of the season for the Tigers.
