Second-half surge not enough for DWU women

Second-half surge not enough for DWU women

MITCHELL, S.D. – After allowing two goals in the first half, the Dakota Wesleyan University women's soccer team gave it all they had, recording three unanswered goals, but it wasn't enough as Central Christian College defeated the Tigers 4-3 on Friday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell.

DWU got on the board in the 62nd minute when sophomore Alyssa Weidler (Sioux Falls, S.D.) found the net on an assist from Kassandra Lagadon (Union City, Calif.). Less than two minutes later, CCC (2-3) recorded its third goal of the night, but not before Stephanie Banvelos (Hayward, Calif.) answered in the 64th minute on an unassisted goal.

In the 77th minute, Banvelos found Weidler to tie the game at three for the Tigers, however Central Christian put the game out of reach by securing the win with a goal in the 81st minute.

Weidler finished with nine shots and three shots on goal, while Jocelyn Behm (Sioux Falls, S.D.) added six shots.

The Tigers outshot CCC 27-8. Goalie Hannah Bowes (Omaha, Neb.) tallied three saves in 90 minutes of work.

DWU (4-1) hosts Presentation College in a nonconference battle at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell.
