Tigers fall on senior day

MITCHELL, S.D. – After trailing by three goals, the Dakota Wesleyan University women's soccer team tallied two scores in the second half to pull within a goal. However, the comeback was too late as DWU fell to Morningside College in a Great Plains Athletic Conference battle, 3-2 Saturday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex.

The Mustangs (10-7-1, 8-4 GPAC) jumped on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 22nd minute and 27th minute to take a 2-0 lead. Morningside added another goal in the 39th minute to take a 3-0 lead into halftime.

The second half belonged to the Tigers (6-11, 4-8 GPAC) as they found their offensive rhythm. Following a Morningside hand ball, Josephine Bardsley (Tea, S.D.) connected on a penalty kick to put DWU on the scoreboard.

In the 73rd minute, Bardsley found the back of the net again to pull the Tigers within a goal. Neither team scored throughout the remainder of the game as DWU dropped its final game of the season.

Bardsley led the charge offensively for the Tigers as she finished with two goals and three shots on goal. Hannah Spude (Flagstaff, Ariz.) tallied two shots and an assist, while Stephanie Banvelos (Hayward, Calif.) notched two shots. Hannah Bowes (Omaha, Neb.) recorded 11 saves on 14 shots on goal.

The Tigers finish the 2018 season with an overall record of 6-11 and a 4-8 record in conference play.
