DWU outlasts Presentation to start the season

MITCHELL, S.D. –  The Dakota Wesleyan University women's soccer team outlasted Presentation College by a score of 2-1 in overtime to kick-off the 2020 season Sunday at the Pepsi-Cola Sports Complex in Mitchell.

DWU (1-0) jolted to a quick start to open the match as senior forward Megan Hertzog (Salinas, Calif.) found the back of the net by way of a penalty kick in the sixth minute. Despite being outshot 8-6 through the first half, Presentation (0-1-0) responded quickly with the equalizer in the 12th minute when Delainey Williams tallied the Saint's only goal knotting the score at halftime.

Each side continued the strong defensive play well into the second half as both teams were limited to a combined seven shots. Neither team was able to break the tie after 90 minutes of play after junior midfielder Josephine Bardsley (Tea, S.D.) sent a penalty kick over the goal in the 76th minute.

The Tigers were finally able to break the tie in extra time when redshirt-senior Alyssa Weilder (Sioux Falls, S.D.) netted the winning goal off a deflection in the 101st minute putting her just eight goals from tying the all-time career goals scored in DWU women's soccer history.

DWU held a 16-10 edge in shots, including eight shots after halftime. The Tiger offense was paced by Weidler who led the team with eight shots while fellow senior goalkeeper Alissa Betz (Bismarck, N.D.) anchored the defense with six saves after facing seven shots on goal.

The Tigers take to the road as they battle Doane University at 2 pm on Sunday as they travel to Crete, Neb.
