CRETE, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women's soccer team hit the road for the first time this season as they battled Doane University. DWU pounded Doane in the non-conference contest, 4-0 Sunday in Crete, Neb.
It did not take long for DWU to record the first goal of the game as Alyssa Weidler (Sioux Falls, S.D.) found Josephine Bardsley (Tea, S.D.) in the 17th minute to put the Tigers (2-0) up 1-0. Three minutes later, the duo hooked up again for the second goal of the first half as DWU took an early 2-0 lead.
Doane (0-2) tried to cut its deficit in half as they reeled off three corner kicks and five shots over the following 10 minutes. However, Hannah Bowes (Omaha, Neb.) held strong as she denied the flurry of shots to keep the shutout going.
In the opening 10 minutes of the second half, the Tigers of DWU recorded a pair of goals to take a commanding 4-0 lead. In the first goal of the second half was Kamryn Harrop (Willard, Utah) with an assist by Weidler. Two minutes later, Weidler joined the scoring as she netted her second goal of the season, assisted by Bailey Nester (Hartford, S.D.).
There were no goals for the remainder of the game as the DWU defense only allowed two shots in the last 20 minutes of the contest.
Weidler led the way with four shots, three assists and a goal. She now sits seven goals away from breaking the program record for career goals. Bardsley tallied two goals on three shots on goal, as Bowes posted a shutout after snagging four saves.
The Tigers return home to begin conference play to host Hastings College at 1 p.m. on Saturday from the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
