Seward, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University women's soccer team picked up a crucial road victory on Saturday now sitting just one game out of first place in the Great Plains Athletic Conference. DWU defeated conference foe Concordia University 1-0 in a defensive battle Saturday in Seward, Neb.
The Bulldogs (3-2, 3-1 GPAC) started the game on the attack striking three attempts on goal in the first eight minutes of play. The Tigers (5-1, 3-1 GPAC) countered the attack with a shot of their own as Josephine Bardsley (Tea, S.D.) sent an attempt wide right in the 10th minute.
Both teams traded possessions for the remainder of the half while stiffening up defensively as the remainder of the period saw just four shot attempts. In the 30th minute, Alondra Partida (Salinas, Calif.) sent a scoring opportunity high of the goal keeping the match scoreless heading into the intermission.
In the first half, Alissa Betz (Bismarck, N.D.) anchored the DWU defense recording three saves from the goalie position while the Tiger attack managed just two shots.
However, the Blue and Gray found its offensive rhythm right away in the second half. Kamryn Harrop (Willard, Utah) notched the only goal of the match off the assist from Partida in the 50th minute securing not only her first goal of the season but also a 1-0 lead.
Despite being outshot 14-4 in the second period, one goal was more than enough as the DWU defense held strong to help record the 1-0 victory. Betz finished with seven saves while Partida led the charge offensively with three shot attempts and one key assist.
The Tigers take the pitch once again hosting Northwestern College at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday as they return to the Pepsi-Cola Sports Complex in Mitchell.
