MITCHELL, S.D. – It was a pair of goals in each half that aided the Dakota Wesleyan University women's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Doane University in a Great Plains Athletic Conference matchup Saturday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex.
It was a quick start for the Tigers of DWU (6-2, 4-2 GPAC) as they recorded a corner kick less than a minute into the match. Moments later, Megan Hertzog (Salinas, Calif.) let a shot rip towards the goal, but it was saved.
After a foul was called just outside the Doane (0-4-1, 0-2-1 GPAC) penalty box, DWU was set up with a free kick in scoring position. Off the free kick, Hertzog slid the ball to Alondra Partida (Salinas, Calif.) who sailed the ball past the Doane goalkeeper for the first goal of the game.
Less than a minute later, Alyssa Weidler (Sioux Falls, S.D.) scored a breakaway goal, but was eventually called back because she was offsides.
With less than five minutes to play in the half, Kamryn Harrop (Willard, Utah) was fouled inside the penalty box to set up the Tigers with a penalty kick. Harrop took the kick as it found the back of the net to double the DWU lead right before halftime.
The second half began as a defensive battle as both goal keepers kept their nets clean without a goal for the first 20 minutes. However, Partida sailed a ball over the Doane defense as Weidler ran onto the ball to score her first goal of the game.
Seven minutes later, Weidler found the back of the net again, this time with an assist from Josephine Bardsley (Tea, S.D.) to push the DWU lead to four goals. The four goals proved to be too much as DWU recorded its sixth victory of the season.
Weidler led the team with two goals, while Partida tallied a goal and an assist. Harrop added the fourth goal for DWU, as Hannah Bowes (Omaha, Neb.) and Alissa Betz (Bismarck, N.D.) combined for the shutout.
The Tigers square off against rival Mount Marty University at 5 p.m. on Wednesday in Yankton, S.D.
