DAKOTA WESLEYAN FALTERS IN OVERTIME, SUFFERS 2-1 DEFEAT IN 97th MINUTE

MARSHALL, Minn.– In its first road match of the 2021 campaign, the Dakota Wesleyan University women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 overtime defeat versus Division II foe Southwest Minnesota State University in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon in Marshall, Minn. The road match counted as a regular season game for Dakota Wesleyan, though was treated as an exhibition contest for Southwest Minnesota State.

The opening 23 minutes of the first half proved to be a defensive battle as just two shots were attempted, both by SMSU. Hannah Trumbull (Natrona County, Wyo.), who registered her first career start at goalkeeper for Dakota Wesleyan, tallied a save in the 23rd minute and the match remained scoreless.

Minutes later though, the Mustangs scored the first goal of the match in the 26th minute and took a 1-0 lead midway through the period.

Following, both offenses sputtered once again before Josephine Bardsley (Tea, S.D.) found the back of the net in the 34th minute for her second goal of the season and the score sat tied at 1-1. Fellow Tiger (1-1-0) senior Kamryn Harrop (Willard, Utah) attempted a shot in the 43rd minute, however, the attempt was high and the score remained knotted at 1-1 heading into halftime.

The Blue and Gray continued its momentum on the attack in the second half as Alondra Partida (Salinas, Calif.) attempted shots on goal in both the 53rd and 61st minute. Alexis Thompson (Sumner, Wash.) and Bardsley followed with attempts on goal in the 86th and 87th minute, respectively, though both shots were denied. Despite 11 combined shots in the second period, neither team found the back of the net and the match headed for overtime tied at 1-1.

Seven minutes into the overtime period, the Mustangs netted the game-winning goal and secured the 2-1 match victory. The Tigers finished the game with six shots while Trumbull and Isabella Gregg (Moreno Valley, Calif.) collected five saves at goalkeeper.
