SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The Dakota Wesleyan University women's soccer team, in its second conference match of the 2021 season, fell by a score of 4-0 versus GPAC foe Briar Cliff University on Wednesday from Faber Field in Sioux City, Iowa.
Dakota Wesleyan, who seized the offensive momentum initially to open the match, attempted a trio of shots in the first 13 minutes of action. DWU forward Kamryn Harrop (Willard, Utah) sent a shot wide right of the goal in the 13th minute while a shot on goal by Josephine Bardsley (Tea, S.D.) was saved seconds later. Therefore, the score remained unbothered as the match reached the midway point of the first period.
Following an attempt on goal by Tiger (3-4-0, 0-2-0 GPAC) senior Alondra Partida (Salinas, Calif.) in the 22nd minute, the Briar Cliff offense claimed the momentum which left the Dakota Wesleyan backline on its heels for the remainder of the first half. BCU outshot DWU 9-4 in the first 45 minutes of action including back-to-back shots by the Chargers (6-1-0, 4-0-0 GPAC) in the 31st and 32nd minute.
Despite the offensive spark by Briar Cliff, Tiger goalkeeper Isabella Gregg (Moreno Valley, Calif.), and the Blue and Gray defensive unit answered the call. Gregg and company tallied six defensive saves on seven shots faced in the first half, which kept the score knotted at 0-0 at halftime.
The Charger offense broke through for the first goal of the match in the 47th minute, securing the 1-0 lead. In the face of the one-goal deficit, however, Gregg notched back-to-back saves near the 50th minute keeping the Tigers in striking distance.
A second goal though by BCU in the 52nd minute granted Briar Cliff the 2-0 lead while the Dakota Wesleyan attack was held in check for the remainder of the match. Briar Cliff ultimately secured the 4-0 home victory thanks to 11 shots in the second period.
Dakota Wesleyan opens a three-game home stand next as they face GPAC opponent College of Saint Mary at 4 p.m. on Saturday from the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
