PARTIDA’S LATE GOAL CARRIES DAKOTA WESLEYAN TO 1-1 DRAW VERSUS DOANE

Crete, Neb. – In a match that produced 35 total shots and 19 shots on goal, the Dakota Wesleyan University women's soccer team clawed its way to a 1-1 draw versus conference foe Doane University on Saturday from Al Papik Field in Crete, Neb. Facing a late one-goal deficit, Dakota Wesleyan senior forward Alondra Partida (Salinas, Calif.) scored in the 82nd minute to secure the 1-1 draw.

It was the Doane offensive attack jumping out with the early momentum as DOA attempted back-to-back shots in the 11th minute. DWU freshman goalkeeper Isabella Gregg (Moreno Valley, Calif.) secured both shots on goal and the score remained knotted at 0-0 early on.

Nearing the midway point of the first period, the Tiger (6-5-1, 3-3-1 GPAC) offense found its groove as Deandrea Johnson (Antioch, Calif.) sent a shot wide of the goal while Partida sent a shot high. Both teams exploded for multiple shots in the middle of the half but the score sat unbothered moving towards halftime.

Jozy Bardsley (Tea, S.D.) and Partida, who combined for six shots in the first 45 minutes, attempted had opportunities on goal late in the half but neither team found the back of the net at halftime. Gregg recorded four saves in the net as the Dakota Wesleyan offense held an 11-5 advantage in shots over the Tigers (3-7-1, 1-4-1 GPAC) of Doane in the first half.

Despite a strike on goal by Doane in the first 10 minutes of the second period, both offenses stalled in the early going.

Following the slow start out of the intermission, the DOA offense struck first to break the tie in the 73rd minute. Doane sent a shot attempt high of the net but responded with a critical penalty kick and secured the 1-0 lead. 

Unbothered, the Blue and Gray looked to provide the equalizer nearing the end of the match. Alyssa Crnic (Omaha, Neb.) struck an opportunity on goal in the 74th minute following a corner kick by Partida. The shot was ultimately saved, however, DWU netted the tying goal in the 82nd minute off the foot of Partida to match the score at 1-1.

Bardsley attempted a pair of shots in the first overtime though neither team scored moving the contest to a second overtime. Johnson gave the Tigers one final shot in the second overtime while Hannah Trumbull (Casper, Wyo.) notched a save in the 108th minute to preserve the 1-1 draw.

Dakota Wesleyan led the way with 20 shots and 10 shots on goal as five different Tigers struck multiple shots in the match. Meanwhile Gregg and Trumbull combined for eight saves at the goalkeeper position.

DWU returns to the pitch next versus Presentation College as Dakota Wesleyan celebrates Faculty Appreciation Day at 5 p.m. on Wednesday from the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell, S.D.
