ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team got back to its winning ways at the Red Raider Classic on Saturday in Orange City, Iowa.
The Tigers defeated Valley City State University 25-22, 25-11 and 25-19. DWU also took down Waldorf University in five sets. Set scores were 27-25, 23-25, 14-25, 25-22 and 15-10 to move to 3-2 on the season.
In the first match against VCSU, the Tigers scored early and often to defeat the Vikings who compete in the North Star Athletic Association.
In set two against the Vikings, the Tigers took a demanding eight-point lead on back-to-back kills by sophomore Rebecca Frick (Yankton, S.D.) DWU led by as much as 21-9, thanks to a few VCSU errors. In the final set, DWU took a 5-0 lead and later led 11-3 as the Vikings tallied three-straight errors. Freshman Madlyn Christiansen (Omaha, Neb.) tallied two ace serves to put the game out of reach for the Tigers.
Frick recorded 15 kills and eight digs, while Bridgett Knobbe (Norfolk, Neb.) added 28 assists and Sara Herman (Reliance, S.D.) tallied 17 digs.
In the final game of the Red Raider Classic, the Tigers were able to hold off Waldorf University in five sets. Down 2-1 heading into the fourth set, sophomore Kimberly VanBockern (Arlington, S.D.) kept the Tigers within striking distance as she recorded three kills in the set.
The fifth set was all DWU as it cruised to a 10-6 lead, forcing the Warriors to call a timeout. Four errors by Waldorf and a kill by Frick was enough for the Tigers to secure the win.
Knobbe tallied 39 assists, while Frick added 14 kills and 16 digs. VanBockern had 11 kills, while freshman Chelsey Heeg (Freeman, S.D.) pitched in nine kills and Herman had 25 digs.
The Tigers (3-2) take on Waldorf for their home opener at 7 p.m. at the World's Only Corn Palace in Mitchell.
