OMAHA, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team is the third team in the Great Plains Athletic Conference to reach 10 wins on the season, after defeating Grace University in four sets on at the Flames Tournament on Saturday in Omaha, Neb.
Earlier in the day, the Tigers (10-4) dropped a five-set thriller to in-state foe Presentation College. Set scores were: 17-25, 26-24, 22-25, 26-24 and 11-15.
After dropping the first set in the match, the Tigers rallied for extra points in the second and fourth sets, but were ultimately handed their four loss of the season after losing the fifth set.
Rebecca Frick (Yankton, S.D.) continued to have a dominant showing as a sophomore, recording 18 kills and 12 digs. Freshman Chelsey Heeg (Freeman, S.D.) added 10 kills and five digs, while Emily Brunsing (Wagner, S.D.) and Kimberly VanBockern (Arlington, S.D.) had nine and seven kills, respectively. Sara Herman (Reliance, S.D.) tallied 29 digs and Bridgett Knobbe (Norfolk, Neb.) tallied 42 assists and eight digs.
After recording a .486 hitting percentage in the second set of the final match of the day against Grace, it was all DWU in the final two sets. The Tigers crawled back to take the third set and put the Royals at bay in the finale.
Set scores were: 24-26, 25-16, 27-25 and 25-23.
Frick added another double-double with a career-high in kills with 26, while adding 16 digs. Knobbe had personal-best 62 assists to push her over the 500 milestone in just her 14th game as a Tiger. Heeg and Brunsing added 15 and 10 kills, respectively, while Herman tallied 34 digs. Sydney Fritz (Winner, S.D.) pitched in nine kills and Darby Duncan (Mellette, S.D.) had 12 digs.
The Tigers battle in-state rival Dakota State University at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Madison, S.D.
