Red Raiders top Tigers at home

MITCHELL, S.D. – The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team fell in three sets to a high-powered Northwestern College volleyball team in Great Plains Athletic Conference play on Tuesday night at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

 Set scores were: 21-25, 15-25 and 19-25.

The Tigers came out with a strong start causing No. 12 Northwestern to call a couple early timeouts after taking an 11-6 lead. Later in the set, NWC took advantage of a couple errors by the Tigers and ultimately took the set by four points.

After the Red Raiders cruised in set two, the Tigers gave it all they had in the finale. A kill by freshman Chelsey Heeg (Freeman, S.D.) and three-straight errors by the visitors put the Tigers within striking distance. The Tigers responded by narrowing the margin to four points, however two kills by NWC put the set out of reach for DWU.

Rebecca Frick (Yankton, S.D.) tallied six kills and four digs, while Kimberly VanBockern (Arlington, S.D.) and Heeg pitched in four kills. Freshmen Sara Herman (Reliance, S.D.) had eight digs and Bridgett Knobbe (Norfolk, Neb.) had 12 assists and four digs.

The Tigers (12-7, 1-3 GPAC) welcome defending NAIA National Champions No. 1 Hastings College for a GPAC bout at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
