Herman records 1,000th-career dig as Tigers split in York

YORK, Neb. – On a historic night when sophomore Sara Herman (Reliance, S.D.) tallied her 1,000th-career dig, the Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team split games at the York College triangular. DWU lost to Friends University in five sets and defeated York College in straight sets Friday in York, Neb.

 In the first matchup of the night, the Tigers got off to a quick start winning the opening set. The Falcons won the next two sets to take a 2-1 lead. However, the Tigers controlled the fourth set as they never trailed and forced a fifth set. DWU jumped out to a 10-7 lead in the final set. But, it was Friends who rallied and downed the Tigers, 16-14 to win the match.

 Rebecca Frick (Yankton, S.D.) finished the first match with 26 kills and 18 digs, while Chelsey Heeg (Freeman, S.D.) tallied 15 kills and Brittany Bergquist (Wolsey, S.D.) recorded 12 kills. Herman notched 10 digs and Mallory Cooper (Orchard, Neb.) chipped in 13 digs.

 In the second match of the night, it was York who began quickly with a 16-13 lead. The Tigers regained the lead thanks to back-to-back kills from Bergquist, as DWU took the first set.

 DWU dominated the second set from the beginning, taking an early 10-2 lead. The Panthers attempted a comeback as they cut the lead to three points. However, the Tigers scored six-consecutive points on their way to a two-set lead.

 York kept the final set close as the score was tied, 9-9. The Tigers began to pull away late thanks to a kill from Heeg and Frick as DWU won in straight sets.

 Herman finished the second match with nine digs, recording her 1,000th-career dig. Frick tallied 21 kills and 12 digs, as Sierra Mesman (Springfield, S.D.) added 14 digs.

 The Tigers return to conference action against Mount Marty College at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Yankton, S.D.
