TIGERS VOLLEYBALL SURVIVES FIVE SETS AND ADVANCES TO THE SEMIFINALS

Mitchell, S.D. – Fourth seed Dakota Wesleyan volleyball pulled out the win against the fifth seed Northwestern at home. The Tigers won their first five-set match this season at the right time, notching 15 total blocks and hitting .165% on the evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Tigers quickly found themselves down 13-8 in the first set after a few attacking errors.
  • After the DWU timeout, Wilber and company went on a 7-3 run bringing the score within one at 16-15 as the Red Raiders still lead.
  • It wasn't until 23-22 that Dakota Wesleyan grabbed their first lead of the set.
  • Neither team wanted to drop set one, as there were two more ties before the Tigers grabbed three points in a row for the 27-25 opening set win.
  • DWU jumped ahead quickly in the second set, grabbing an 8-5 lead before NWC would notch three points in a row tying the set an 8-8.
  • From that point on, the Red Raiders and the Tigers tied the game ten more times collectively in a back-and-forth match.
  • Despite DWU having a better set-two hitting percentage of .115% to .085%, the Red Raiders grabbed the second set win, tying the match up 1-1.
  • Dakota Wesleyan hit their worst of the match in set-three with a -.073%, only recording 13-points as they trailed 2-1 overall.
  • In the fourth set, the Tigers went up 5-0 early before a Northwestern timeout.
  • After the NWC timeout, the Red Raiders put together a 5-3 run as they closed the DWU lead to 8-5.
  • As Northwestern came closer to tying the set at 10-8, DWU put together a 9-2 run, extending their lead once again to 19-10.
  • NWC made another push to take the lead, but the Tigers held them and tied the match at 2-2 as we went to the fifth and final set.
  • Northwestern served up the fifth set with a 2-1 lead before DWU tied it at 2-2.
  • After the 4-4 tie, the Tigers put up four points to the Red Raiders zero, earning them the 8-4 lead in the final set.
  • NWC and DWU went point-for-point as Northwestern climbed back to tie the set at 14-14.
  • The Tigers shut the door on the Red Raiders with the final two points needed to win the fifth and final set 16-14 and advance to the semifinal match.

Dakota Wesleyan will travel to Jamestown, N.D. on Wednesday, November 10, for a semifinal match against the top seed Jimmies. The Tigers and Jamestown are slated to square off at 7 p.m. from Harold Newman Arena.
