How It Happened

Callie Slagter got things rolling for DWU with a service ace to start the rotation. Ady Dwight and Abigail Brunsing were the center of the attack right away, each recording a kill then a block pushing the lead to 6-2 over the Lancers. The Tigers couldn't get a commanding lead though as MMU was able to keep the score close. Dakota Wesleyan held the lead till Mount Marty started a 6-1 run tying the score at 18-18. DWU fought hard at the end to win the first set, and it worked in their favor. After MMU took the one-point lead, 25-24, Madeline Else set Emily Dale and Dwight for a pair of kills in back-to-back rallies, before Brunsing and Dwight connected for the set point block to win 27-25 and take the 1-0 match lead.

The second set was all Tigers, with a score of 25-9, the Lancers were not able to get any momentum going as DWU only needed seven servers to grab the win. Dakota Wesleyan was up 7-0 before MMU got their first kill of the set. The Tigers continued to dominate the Lancers, going up by ten, 13-3; then by 12, 18-6. Dakota Wesleyan kept going back to their known hitters in Dwight and Miller as they grabbed the massive set win 25-9 and take the 2-0 match lead. The Tigers hit their best all match in the second set, posting 12 kills and one error for a .344 hitting percentage. The Lancers were held to eight kills and eight errors in the same set.

DWU didn't quite get the same jump in the third, but it still proved to be more than MMU could handle. With the Tigers leading 5-3, Tya Weideman stepped back to serve as Else and Dwight continued to find each other pushing DWU out to an 8-3 lead. After a pair of MMU errors, giving Dakota Wesleyan a 19-13 lead, the Lances strung together four points, closing their deficit to 17-19. The Tigers were able to gain some free points on Mount Marty errors, while also distributing the attacks between, Mariah Gloe, Miller, and Dwight for the third set win and the 3-0 sweep.

Overall, No. 10 DWU hit .260 as a team, while holding MMU to hitting .161. Dwight led the Tigers grabbing 19 kills and hitting .500 on the day. Miller and Dale posted eight and seven kills, respectively. Else set 35 assists in the match, while Hanna Reiff tallied 15 digs, and Gloe chipping in with 11 digs.
