DWU baseball falls to Jamestown

In the first game, the Tigers were down by one and had the bases loaded in the seventh inning, but failed to score and lost 5-4. In the nightcap, Jamestown used a big third inning to propel itself to a 12-5 victory. Dakota Wesleyan is now 13-23 overall.
Jamestown got on the board first on an RBI double and an RBI single in the first inning, but the Tigers got within run on a solo homer from Erik Nockleby in the fourth. The Jimmies scored three more runs – including the eventual winning run – in the bottom of the inning on a three-run homer by Spencer Flaten.
DWU added a single run on another solo shot, this one by Jon Holsworth, in the fifth, and got within a single run in the sixth inning. Stephen Gunnell singled and Nick Tadlock doubled to start the inning, and Toby Kaplan sent both runners home with an RBI single. Gunnell advanced to second on a groundoutby Holsworth, but the next two batters got out to end the inning.
Jamestown stranded two runners in the bottom of the sixth, and the Tigers loaded the bases to start the seventh. Sam Schumacher and Nockleby both walked to start the inning, and Michael Lukkasonreached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. The next three batters went down in order, however to leave all three runners stranded and give the Jimmies the win.
Tadlock had three hits and Nockleby and Kaplan both had two to pace DWU and Kaplan had two RBIs. The Tigers had 10 total hits. Mickey Grant threw the first four innings and took the loss. He gave up five runs on six hits with two strikeouts. Luke Bamberg threw the final two innings and struck out one batter and didn't give up any hits.
The Tigers scored two runs in the first inning on a two-run homer by Gunnell to start the second game, but Jamestown used six hits and a DWU error to score seven runs in the third and take a 7-2 lead. The Jimmies added one run in the fifth and four in the sixth to go up 12-2 heading into the final inning.Nockleby had an RBI double, Kirk McBreen scored on a wild pitch and Lukkason had an RBIgroundout, but three runs was all DWU could come up with to end the game.
McBreen had two hits to lead the Tigers and Gunnell had two RBIs. The Tigers had six hits to the Jimmies' 11. Schyler Bryan threw the first 2.1 innings and took the loss. He gave up five runs on five hits. Tyler Johnson threw 2.2 innings and gave up three runs on three hits, and Zac Custer gave up four runs on three hits in the final inning.
Dakota Wesleyan is back in action and returns to Great Plains Athletic Conference play Thursday, April 5, when it travels to Sioux City, Iowa, to take on Briar Cliff University. The Tigers are back at home Saturday, April 7, when they host Morningside College at 1 p.m.
