DWU baseball wraps up Nebraska road trip
HASTINGS, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University wrapped up a four-game road trip Sunday with a split against Hastings College in Hastings, Neb. The Tigers lost a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader to Doane College Saturday in Crete, Neb., before earning the split Sunday afternoon.

HASTINGS, Neb. – The Dakota Wesleyan University wrapped up a four-game road trip Sunday with a split against Hastings College in Hastings, Neb. The Tigers lost a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader to Doane College Saturday in Crete, Neb., before earning the split Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers are now 20-21 overall and 7-9 and tied for seventh with Hastings in the GPAC. Northwestern leads the league with a 13-1 record and Doane is second at 11-5. DWU has conference doubleheaders against Dordt and Mount Marty colleges remaining.
Saturday in Crete, Doane beat the Tigers 4-1 and 3-2 in eight innings. In the first game of the day, the Doane Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on three hits and one Tiger error. They added another run in the second on an RBI double before Dakota Wesleyan got on the board in the third. Toby Kaplan singled to start and Anthony Pakutka – pinch running for Kaplan – eventually scored an unearned run on a fielding error. Doane added one more run in the bottom of the inning. DWU stranded two runners in both the fourth and fifth innings but failed to score.
Erik Nockleby had two hits to pace Dakota Wesleyan, which had six total hits. Matt Mundfrom threw all six innings and gave up four runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.
In the second game, the DWU Tigers scored in the first on an RBI double by Tim Cusick, and extended their lead to 2-0 in the sixth when Nick Tadlock walked, advanced when Nockleby was hit by a pitch, stole third and scored on a throwing error. Doane tied the score in the bottom of the inning on an error and an RBI double. Neither team scored in the seventh, and DWU went down in order in the top of the eighth, but Doane scored the game-winning run on an RBI single.
DWU had just three hits against Doane in the second game. Cusick and Kaplan both doubled. Chris Housley threw all seven innings and gave up three runs on six hits. He struck out four batters.
The Tigers bounced back Sunday with an 8-2 win over Hastings in the first game of the day. DWU scored four runs in the second on an RBI single by Nockleby, an RBI groundout by Tyler Waddle, a passed ball and a wild pitch. The Tigers added a single run in the third on an RBI sac fly by Cusick, and scored twice more in the fifth on an RBI groundout by Cusick and a sac fly by Nockleby. DWU scored its last run of the game in the sixth when Waddle walked and scored on a double play.
Hastings scored twice in the seventh on a wild pitch and a passed ball, but the Tigers held on for the win. Tadlock and Nockleby both had two hits to lead DWU – which had nine hits total – and Nockleby had two RBIs. Kyle Larson threw the first six innings and earned the win. He gave up six hits and struck out five batters. Josh Wagner threw the final inning.
The Broncos got their revenge in the second game. DWU scored in the second on an RBI single by Waddle, but that would be all the runs the Tigers could muster. Hastings tied the game on an RBI fielder's choice in the fifth, and scored the game-winner in the sixth on an RBI single.
Cody Silveria and Waddle each had two hits for the Tigers, who had five total hits. Kevin Hatcher threw the first 5.2 innings and gave up two runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Nick Pecha recorded the final out of the game for DWU.
Dakota Wesleyan is back in action Thursday, April 25, when it travels to Sioux Center, Iowa, to take on Dordt College in a 4 p.m. doubleheader. The Tigers host Dakota State in one nine-inning, nonconference game at 6 p.m. Friday, April 26, and host Mount Marty College at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 27, for senior day.
