ABERDEEN, S.D.– Stepping out of conference action for the final time of the season, the Dakota Wesleyan University baseball squad took on Presentation College for a pair of games. DWU took the opening game 18-1, but dropped the second game 14-6 on Tuesday in Aberdeen, S.D.
It didn't take long for DWU to take the lead as they tallied four runs in the opening inning as Drew DeMers (Winner, S.D.) droved a run home with a double. Daulton Wilcoxen (Council Bluffs, Iowa) came to the plate next and connected on an RBI single, while two more runs were added in the opening frame.
The Saints (9-38) notched a run in the bottom of the second inning to pull within three runs. However, that would be all Presentation could muster at the plate in the opening game.
The third inning was highlighted by a Jared Jones (Edmond, Okla.) two-run double down the left-field line. After recording a pair of runs in the fourth, the Tigers (14-23) erupted for six runs in the top of the fifth inning. Jones recorded another two-run double, while Cole Hellie (Phoenix, Ariz.) brought two runs home with a single.
DWU finished the game with three runs in the sixth inning to take the first game with their highest run total of the season at 18 runs scored.
Jones finished with an impressive 2-for-4 performance at the plate as he drove in four runs and scored one run himself. Hellie went 1-for-1 with two RBIs, while Wilcoxen scored three runs, drove in two runs and finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Layne Stafford (Arlington, Neb.) picked up the win as he pitched five frames and recorded six strikeouts.
The second game saw a steady dose of scoring by the Tigers as they took an early 1-0 lead after Luke LeMay (St. Paul, Minn.) drove DeMers home in the top of the first. However, the Saints recorded nine runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a commanding lead.
In the second frame, Bradley Dean (Pierre, S.D.) connected on a single, as Reed Harter (Colome, S.D.) advanced to third and scored following a wild throw. But, PC notched two more runs in the bottom half of the frame to take an 11-2 advantage.
Despite scoring a run in each of the next two innings, the Tigers were unable to overcome the early deficit as they dropped the second game of the day.
Harter scored two runs as he went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Cameron Quigley (Newcastle, Wyo.) finished 1-for-3 with a run batted in. Cole Barthel (Tea, S.D.) opened the game and recorded one strikeout, as the pitching staff combined for seven total strikeouts.
The Tigers return home to take on in-state rival Mount Marty University for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday from Cadwell Field in Mitchell.
